Alcove fortress

            The ruins of Monarch Cave perch at the edge of a cliff that drops into a plunge pool below.  The alcove/ cave is adorned with pictographs and petroglyphs, as well as beautiful multicolored desert varnish streaks.  Occupied by ancestral Puebloans, the ruins are notable for their construction right on the edge of the cliff, presumably for the extra protection of the alcove from invaders below.  This was the conclusion of the America Exploring Expedition in 1892, the first archeological expedition to the site, which concluded "The entire aspect of the cave is of defense and protection rather than comfort."  There appear to be at least 3 different building periods, based on the mortar and masonry.  I had assumed the stacked rocks lacking mortar was part of an early "restoration" effort, but a drawing of the ruins from the 1890's shows the same stacked loose rocks, indicating the wall is older than "modern."
