Lord of the spines

            Cactus wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) on top of an Organ Pipe cactus (Stenocereus thurberi).  Cactus wrens are the largest of the North American wrens, residents of the deserts of the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico.  They eat insects and spiders, and occasionally reptiles and seeds.  Cactus wrens nest in their namesake cactus plants or in thorny shrubs.  They are one of the most conspicuous inhabitants of the Sonoran desert, their scratchy call commonly heard in the warmer months.  They are thought to be able to survive entirely without drinking free standing water, obtaining all of their water from their food and from metabolism, breaking down carbohydrates into water and carbon dioxide.
