Welcome to Marlboro Country under the West Side Highway by 150th Street. An urban jungle back then. Today it's home to one of the world's largest sewage processing plants between the highway and the Hudson River to the left. New York. Sept 1979.

            In the late 1970s, I became fascinated by this bizarre no-man's land under the West Side Highway. The apartments of Morningside Heights were to the right and the Hudson River to the left. Once they sliced the highway through in the early 1930s, the land below was left to regenerate back into a forgotten urban forest. Look at that stand of wild pine trees on the other side of the highway.

 Today, this has all been restored with playgrounds, basketball courts and jogging/biking paths. As mentioned above, the land immediately by the Hudson now contains one of the world's largest sewage processing plants. You can still smell its faintly funky odor while zooming by on the elevated portion of the West Side Highway in the 150th street area.
