Abandoned Railroad Trestle - a photo on Flickriver

            The Midland Valley Railroad was laid out around 1905 which qualifies this as an Indian Territory route. Connecting Ft. Smith, Arkansas and Wichita, Kansas, it passed through Muskogee, Tulsa, and Pawhuska. North of Skiatook it wound its way thru the Osage Hills and crosses over several streams, including this bridge over Bird Creek.

Eventually this became the Osage Railroad and around 1991 a group of railroad enthusiasts began a series of excursions between Tulsa and Barnsdall (the northern terminus by this time). I rode this train which was an all-day event; the track was especially rough in spots and at times we barely crept along, but in others the trackage was fairly good and we roared along at about 30mph. But the Osage Railroad struggled, only sending trains up on an as-needed basis for one of its two customers (an oil refinery in Barnsdall), and eventually in 1999 the Osage Railroad successfully filed for abandonment. 

Today the portion between Skiatook and Tulsa is a bicycle/jogging trail, but the portion from Skiatook to Barnsdall is abandoned and in many areas the old railroad bed is hard to spot.
