Radio Noordzee broadcasting platform from 1964 now serves as restaurant

The REM Island was a platform towed off the Dutch coast in 1964 as the pirate broadcasting home of Radio and TV Noordzee. Both stations were dismantled by armed forces of the Netherlands. It was six miles off Noordwijk. Radio and TV Noordzee was founded in 1963 with land-based offices and broadcast from the sea. The artificial island was towed to its location and anchored in cement on the seabed. On August 1964 regular broadcasting started. REM stands for Reclame Exploitatie Maatschappij advertising exploitation company. The company intended to broadcast commercial radio and TV. Dutch law at the time did not authorize such broadcasts but the island was outside territorial waters. Other stations, such as Radio Veronica, used a ship. The REM island could count on strong support among the Dutch people. In the first week of broadcast over two million viewers were tuned on TV Noordzee. But Dutch authorities were unhappy but they could not prevent the broadcasts. On December the government passed the REM law, which split the North Sea into continental sections. The sea bed under REM Island, to which the structure was attached, was declared Dutch territory. Five days later, Royal Marines boarded the platform and ended broadcasting. A year after the raid, Radio Noordzee resumed transmissions legally under the name TROS. After that REM Island was used by the government to measure sea temperature and salt concentration. After a failed attempt to sell the island in 2004, the government dismantled it with a goodbye radio event by amateur radio enthusiasts. Now the platform sits in Amsterdam harbour where it serves as a restaurant and public viewpoint overlooking the habor of Amsterdam.

The REM-eiland is in a 3 story off shore platform located in the habor of Amsterdam. The platform build in 1964 was dismantled, brought to shore and rebuilt and as of July 2011 houses Restaurant REM-eiland.

Het REM-eiland was een platform in de Noordzee, op 9 kilometer buiten de kust van Noordwijk. In 1964 werden vanaf deze basis commerciële televisie-uitzendingen onder de naam TV Noordzee verzorgd. In 1963 werd de Reclame Exploitatie Maatschappij REM gesticht. De REM wilde commerciële radio- en televisie-uitzendingen verzorgen. Omdat de Nederlandse wetgeving dit niet toestond zouden de uitzendingen geschieden vanaf een locatie juist buiten de territoriale wateren 10km uit de kust van Noordwijk. Uitzenden vanaf een basis op zee werd veiliger geacht dan uitzendingen vanaf een schip zoals een radiozendpiraat/zeezender als Veronica al deed. Het REM eiland kon rekenen op grote steun onder de bevolking. In de eerste week van uitzending waren ruim twee miljoen kijkers op TV Noordzee afgestemd. Vele duizenden Nederlanders kochten een speciale REM-antenne om de zender te kunnen ontvangen, anderen fabriceerden zelf een antenne uit bijvoorbeeld een ijzeren kleerhanger. Op 17 december 1964 werd alweer de apparatuur van het REM-eiland echter door de Nederlandse Koninklijke Marine geconfisqueerd. Deze actie kon worden ondernomen omdat er een noodwet was aangenomen die uitzendingen verbood vanaf constructies gebouwd op de zeebodem. Ondanks de populariteit van de zender zocht de regering naar een manier om de commerciële zender zo snel mogelijk te verbieden. Zeezenders die vanaf een schip uitzonden konden hiermee nog niet worden aangepakt. Uit de REM kwam later de legale Nederlandse zendgemachtigde TROS voort. De naam TROS werd overigens reeds gebruikt toen er vanaf het REM-eiland werd uitgezonden. Nadat de zeezenders waren verdwenen, nam Rijkswaterstaat het eiland in gebruik als meetpost. In de nazomer van 2006 werd het REM eiland geheel ontmanteld en aan wal gebracht voor de sloop. Samen met woningcorporatie De Key werd er een plan ontwikkeld om het eiland te redden van de sloop en het om te toveren tot restaurant. Eind maart 2011 werd het REM-eiland overgebracht naar het Amsterdamse IJ, bij de Haparandadam. Dit gebied zal de komende jaren ontwikkeld worden naar een woongebied. Het gerenoveerde REM-eiland biedt nu onderdak aan een restaurant en daarnaast is het een publiekelijk toegankelijk uitkijkpunt met uitzicht over de Houthaven en het IJ.
