Statue of Neptune designed by Michelangelo

The Piazza del Campidoglio is a square on the hill Capitoline in Rome not far from Piazza Venezia. The square was designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The square is accessible via a large staircase. In the center of the square is the Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. On the square are the Palazzo Senatorio, the City Hall of Rome, and the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo, in which the Capitoline Museums are located. The ancient Romans made use of chairs, but not to sit at a dining table; for their dinners they lay on couches in a position very similar to the above ancient statue of Neptune. Neptune was the rivergod and by adding the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus it portrayed theTiber river. Michelangelo placed Neptune in front of Palazzo Senatorio. They were originally made for another monument. They most likely decorated the baths which Emperor Constantine built on the site of today's Palazzo Rospigliosi, where they were found, dated 2nd century AD.

De Piazza del Campidoglio is een plein op de heuvel Capitolijn in Rome niet ver van Piazza Venezia. Het plein is ontworpen door Michelangelo Buonarroti. Het plein is bereikbaar via een grote trap. Midden op het plein staat een kopie van het Ruiterstandbeeld van Marcus Aurelius. Aan het plein liggen het Palazzo Senatorio, het stadhuis van Rome, en het Palazzo dei Conservatori en het Palazzo Nuovo, waarin de Capitolijnse Musea gevestigd zijn. De oude Romeinen gebruikten stoelen, maar niet om aan een eettafel te zitten; voor hun diners lagen ze op banken in een positie die erg lijkt op die welke wordt geïllustreerd door de twee oude beelden van riviergoden die Michelangelo voor het Palazzo Senatorio plaatste. Ze beelden de Nijl en de Tigris af; de laatste hierboven te zien werd echter in de Tiber veranderd door de wolvin toe te voegen aan Romulus en Remus. Ze verfraaiden hoogstwaarschijnlijk de baden die keizer Constantijn bouwde op de plaats van het huidige Palazzo Rospigliosi, waar ze werden gevonden, maar aangezien ze dateren uit de tweede eeuw na Christus, zijn ze oorspronkelijk gemaakt voor een ander monument.
