A winter walk around Doorwerth Castle

Doorwerth Castle is a medieval castle situated on the river Rhine near the city of Arnhem, Netherlands. Castle Doorwerth is one of the oldest castles in Holland, boasting a history that stretches back as far as the 12th century, and is absolutely worth a visit. Not only for the three excellent museums that it houses, but also because of the beautiful building, the century-old trees and its unique surroundings. The castle’s immediate surroundings are beautiful; it is located at the point where the steep wooded lateral moraine of the Veluwezoom merges into the broad floodplains of the Lower Rhine. The first, probably wooden, castle was first mentioned in 1260 when it was besieged and burned to the ground as a result. It was rebuilt in stone. During the 14th century the castle was continually enlarged. Until 1402 Doorwerth Castle was the property of the van Dorenweerd family. The castle suffered heavily in 1944 when it was transformed into a cheerless ruin. Directly after WW II a lengthy restoration followed that lasted until 1983. By then the castle was back into its 18th century state. The castle’s impressive great hall is now available for small receptions, events and wedding celebrations.

Kasteel Doorwerth is een mooi voorbeeld van een waterburcht, waarbij de dikke buitenmuren samen met het water voor bescherming zorgen. Het kasteel ligt op een ideale plek: goed verdedigbaar op een uiterwaard aan de Rijn en strategisch aan de oude hoofdweg van Arnhem naar Utrecht. Een prima plek voor tolheffing. In 1260 werd de burcht voor het eerst vermeld. De roofzuchtige praktijken van kasteelheer Berend van Dorenweerd waren de graaf van Gelre en de bisschop van Utrecht een doorn in het oog. Tijdens een belegering werd het toen nog houten gebouw verwoest. Daarna werd het kasteel door Berends zoon Hendric weer opgebouwd. De zwartste dagen van het kasteel zijn van recentere datum. Bij de bevrijding van Zuid-Nederland in september 1944 lag het kasteel zwaar onder vuur. Na de oorlog bleef weinig meer over dan een trieste puinhoop. Het koste 37 jaar om het kasteel in oude luister te herbouwen. Sinds 1983 is het kasteel weer in zijn Middeleeuwse glorie te bewonderen. Kasteel Doorwerth is daarmee een van de fraaiste kastelen van Nederland. Kasteel Doorwerth is prachtig gelegen in de uiterwaarden van de Rijn. In het kasteel zijn drie musea te bezoeken. Op de stuwwal erachter ligt een afwisselend heuvellandschap met bossen, akkers en weilanden waar het heerlijk wandelen of fietsen is. Er loopt een struinpad van het kasteel door de uiterwaarden van de Rijn en terug.
