Veluwezoom National Park is a national park located in the Dutch province of Gelderland. This park is the oldest national park of the Netherlands. It is an area of 50 square kilometers at the southeastern edge of the Veluwe. The landscape of the park consists of forests and heathland, which is kept open by grazing of Highland cattle, and a small sand drift, which is kept open by human maintenance. The native fauna is represented by red deer, wild boar, badger and the regionally rare pine marten. There are two wildlife observation posts on the Veluwezoom, allowing you to observe the local wildlife without disturbing the animals. September and October are red deer mating season, during which time male red deer attempt to impress females by roaring. The southern side of the Veluwezoom offers beautiful estates with grand country houses and monumental farms. The estates of Beekhuizen, Heuven and Rhereroord are historical country houses, complete with parks.

If you’re visiting the Veluwezoom, you have to climb the Posbank. The Posbank is a 90 metre high hill offering an unparalleled view of the reserve. In clear weather, you can see as far as 20 kilometres. You can freely walk and explore the roads and paths of the region, or take advantage of one of the many opportunities to discover the Veluwe by horse, bicycle or mountain bike. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself eye to eye with a red deer or wild boar! Wildlife and Icelandic horses graze here ensure that the area is not densely growing but remains open. In the summer arise brushwood which mice and insects find plenty of food and shelter. The mice are, in turn, food for the owls and birds of prey as Kestrel and hawk. Dung beetles coming at the horse manure are eaten by the fox and badger. In this area the herbivorous animals are common: Scottish Highlanders, Icelandic horses and deers. Welkom op de Veluwezoom. Het oudste nationale park van Nederland, hoge toppen zoals de Posbank, eindeloze heidevelden en wild spotten. Vooral tegen zonsondergang loop je kans om wild te zien. Genoeg te ontdekken en beleven: gezellige dorpen, imposante landgoederen en de kronkelende rivier de IJssel. Geniet van Nationaal Park Veluwezoom, ruim 5100 hectare bos, heide, zandverstuivingen en statige landgoederen ten oosten van Arnhem. Het Veluwetransferium Posbank is het ideale startpunt voor een wandel- en/of fietsroute over de Veluwezoom en de Posbank. Vanuit hier kun je mooie tochten maken door Renkum en Rheden. Gelet op de lengte, het pittige klimwerk en de vele bezienswaardigheden zijn deze routes zeer geschikt voor een volledig dagje uit in de natuur. Toen na het laatste glaciaal het klimaat warmer werd, raakte het gebied na verloop van tijd geheel bedekt met loofbos. Na de vestiging van de eerste mensen in de omgeving werd in de loop der eeuwen het meeste bos gekapt of verdween door overmatige begrazing door schapen en runderen. Hierdoor ontstonden uitgestrekte heidevelden. Het wild en de IJslandse paarden die hier grazen zorgen dat het gebied niet met bomen weer dichtgroeit maar open blijft. In de zomer ontstaan ruigten waarin muizen en insecten volop voedsel en schuilgelegenheid vinden. De muizen vormen op hun beurt weer voedsel voor de uilen en roofvogels als torenvalk en buizerd. Mestkevers die op de paardenmest af komen worden gegeten door de vos en das.
