The dunes of Wijk aan Zee overlooking the sea and the dunes at the back. A short distance to the North Holland Dune Reserve, where you can make beautiful walking and cycling. The cozy and tourist village starts right at the entrance dune. From early dykes, polders and windmills to more modern feats of engineering, the Dutch have successfully devised numerous ways to hold back the water, but few are quite so beautiful as the Dutch dunes. A wonder of man-made nature, the dune landscapes created to reserve the North Sea coast not only keep the sea at bay but are also a delight of natural preservation, ripe with national park lands. One of the areas of international importance for which the Netherlands has a special responsibility is the strip of coastal dunes. Almost all the Dutch dunes are part of the Natura 2000 network. The Dutch dunes have been protected for a long time because of their importance for flood protection along the coast. Walking, hiking and cycling are perhaps the best ways to fully enjoy the peace and calm of the sheltered, centuries-old woodland parks that beautify the Dutch coastal dunes.

It's a two hour walk from Wijk aan Zee to Castricum aan Zee. A quiet afternoon walk. On windy days the dunes are popular for kite flying and windsurfing. Wijk aan Zee is a popular paragliding place. De heerlijke rust van onze prachtige Nederlandse strand. Nederland heeft een dynamische kust, opgebouwd uit zand. Zee en wind zorgen ervoor dat het zand voortdurend in beweging is. Dit heeft geleid tot een uniek duinlandschap dat zich uitstrekt van de kop van de Zeeuwse eilanden via de Zuid- en Noord-Hollandse kust tot de Waddeneilanden. Het Noordhollands Duinreservaat is een van de grootste natuurgebieden in ons land. Het strekt zich uit vanaf de Corusterreinen bij Wijk aan Zee tot de Schoorlse Duinen. Daarmee is het zo’n 20 kilometer lang en 2,5 km breed, met een oppervlakte van 5300 hectare. In dit prachtige gebied komen veel plant- en diersoorten voor. Dit heeft alles te maken met de uitgestrektheid en afwisselende begroeiing van het gebied. Ook de hoogte, vochtigheid, kalkgehalte en het menselijk gebruik in het verleden hebben gezorgd voor een grote verscheidenheid aan soorten. In de 21ste eeuw is het duin belangrijk voor de mens als zeewering en als gebied voor natuur, recreatie en waterwinning. Paragliders of te wel schermvliegers maken gebruik van een bries uit het westen, die tegen de duinen waait. daar door ontstaat een stijgwind waar mee ze langs de duinen vliegen of zeilen. Wijk aan Zee is een populaire 'spot' onder paragliders.
