In western Shan State, you will find the serenely picturesque Inle Lake, famous for its floating villages, gardens and markets and the unique way of life of the local Intha people, with their functioning communities based entirely on the water. Fishermen work the lake, using a mesmerizing one-legged paddling technique you won’t see anywhere else in the world. Hydroponic tomato farming is also big here, based on an aquabiotic system in use since the 1960s. Cruising along channels hemmed in by floating gardens is simply sublime. Almost every visitor to Nyaungshwe takes a boat trip on Inle Lake. But the lake is so large and the villages so spread out that Inle never feels too crowded. Inle lake was one of our highlight of our Myanmar trip. It was lovely travelling around the lake in a long tail boat. Villages of rustic single- and two-story wooden stilt houses straddle active waterways. Nga Phe Kyaung is the biggest and most ancient wooden monastery on Inle Lake. It was built at the ends of 1850s. This special monastery was built on stilts above the Inle Lake surface. Nga Phe Kyaung is famous for a collection of Buddha images and pagodas from ancient Tibet, Bagan and different parts of Myanmar.

In Myanmar and the first thing we noticed was the large number of monks of all ages everywhere. Many families from poorer or more rural backgrounds take up the chance to send their son to be a monk as it also means a free education. They eat, pray, become educated, play and live together, and for potentially decades they form a new family. From as young as seven years old, the boys of Myanmar train as novice monks. Growing up together in their ancient monasteries they form a brotherhood of close connections. Every Buddhist Burmese boy between the age of 7 and 13 is expected to enter the monastery as a novice monk for a period of a few weeks to several months. He has a choice to return to life outside the monastery at any time, or he can stay on as a monk, if he so chooses. They eat, pray, become educated, play and live together. In het hart van Myanmar ligt het bijzondere Inle Lake. Het 22 kilometer lange meer ligt in de provincie Shan State. Inle Lake is het op één na grootste meer in Myanmar en ligt op bijna negenhonderd meter hoogte. Rondom Inle Lake zijn verschillende dorpen en vier steden gevestigd. Hier leven, wonen en werken mensen van en op het water. Inle Lake is een populaire stop onder toeristen in Myanmar. Het is makkelijk te zien waarom. Op het gigantische meer, gelegen tussen de bergen, pendelen de vissers met één arm en been, terwijl ze met de andere arm tegelijkertijd aan het vissen zijn. Een prachtig plaatje, het is ons een raadsel hoe ze dit voor elkaar krijgen. Verder naar het zuiden kom je vele tempels, pagodes en dorpjes tegen. De lokale bewoners wonen hier in eenvoudige paalwoningen op het water. Bijzonder om te zien. In het op palen gebouwde Nga Phe Kyaung klooster maak je kennis met de vele monniken die Myanmar rijk is. Nga Phe Kyaung is de grootste en oudste houten klooster op Inle Lake. Het werd gebouwd in de jaren van 1850. Dit speciale klooster is gebouwd op palen boven het Inlemeer. Het klooster is beroemd om een verzameling van Boeddha beelden en pagodes uit het oude Tibet, Bagan en van verschillende delen van Myanmar. Het boeddhisme in Myanmar is de belangrijkste religie in het land. Als je reist door Myanmar kom je uiteraard in contact met het boeddhisme. Overal zie je de monniken, nonnen en pagodes. Ongeveer 89 % van de bevolking is er aanhanger van het Theravada-boeddhisme. Over het algemeen worden monniken door de Boeddha aangemoedigd om wereldse aangelegenheden en passies achter zich te laten, zodat zij gemakkelijker in staat zijn een staat van vrede en wijsheid te bereiken, en sterke ongezonde emoties zoals haat, verlangen en lust te overwinnen.
