We felt like we were in the middle of nowhere at the Shwe Inn Tha Floating resort

In western Shan State, you will find the serenely picturesque Inle Lake, famous for its floating villages, gardens and markets and the unique way of life of the local Intha people, with their functioning communities based entirely on the water. The lake, which measures 22 km long by 10 km wide, and sits in a valley between two mountain ranges, feels like a different world to the rest of Myanmar: in villages and towns across the lake, wooden houses are built high on stilts and fishermen steer their one-man boats with a unique rowing style, wrapping one leg around their oar. Life on the shallow, freshwater lake is utterly captivating: With no roads or sidewalks to speak of, locals and visitors alike get around in one-person-wide wooden boats outfitted with outboard propellers, which emit a noisy whine when at full throttle and can be raised and lowered depending on water levels. Villages of rustic single- and two-story wooden stilt houses straddle active waterways. Fishermen work the lake, using a mesmerizing one-legged paddling technique you won’t see anywhere else in the world. Hydroponic tomato farming is also big here, based on an aquabiotic system in use since the 1960s. Cruising along channels hemmed in by floating gardens is simply sublime

Almost every visitor to Nyaungshwe takes a boat trip on Inle Lake. But the lake is so large and the villages so spread out that Inle never feels too crowded. Inle lake was one of our highlight of our Myanmar trip. It was lovely travelling around the lake in a long tail boat. Villages of rustic single- and two-story wooden stilt houses straddle active waterways. The Shwe Inn Tha Floating Resort located in the middle of somewhere in such a beautiful Inle lake. It can only be reached by boat. The resort impressed me at very 1st sight. The resort is quite unique, wooden huts on the water, with a lot of character and some nice touches such as outdoor shower, nice veranda. We had a fantastic stay and felt like we were in the middle of nowhere.

Alsof complete weilanden zijn overstroomd, groeien gewassen boven de waterspiegel. Glanzende tomaten steken rood af tegen de groene en blauwe omgeving. Locals banen zich in kleine bootjes een weg door hun drijvende boerderij. In het hart van Myanmar ligt het bijzondere Inle Lake. Het 22 kilometer lange meer ligt in de provincie Shan State. Inle Lake is het op één na grootste meer in Myanmar en ligt op bijna negenhonderd meter hoogte. Rondom Inle Lake zijn verschillende dorpen en vier steden gevestigd. Hier leven, wonen en werken mensen van en op het water. Inle Lake is een populaire stop onder toeristen in Myanmar. Het is makkelijk te zien waarom. Op het gigantische meer, gelegen tussen de bergen, pendelen de vissers met één arm en been, terwijl ze met de andere arm tegelijkertijd aan het vissen zijn. Een prachtig plaatje, het is ons een raadsel hoe ze dit voor elkaar krijgen. Verder naar het zuiden kom je vele tempels, pagodes en dorpjes tegen. De lokale bewoners wonen hier in eenvoudige paalwoningen op het water. Bijzonder om te zien. De omgeving is erg mooi, waardoor het een leuke bestemming is. Verken Inle Lake door het maken van een boottocht. Dit is te regelen, of bij de ‘haven’ waar de boten vertrekken. Je betaalt per boot, dus probeer een aantal andere reizigers te vinden om de kosten te delen. Een boottocht voert je langs de mooiste plekken van Inle Lake. De drijvende tuinen van Kela zijn de trots van de bewoners. En in het op palen gebouwde Nga Phe Kyaung klooster maak je kennis met de vele monniken die Myanmar rijk is. We verblijven in het Shwe Inn Tha Floating resort op het rustige gedeelte van het Inle-meer. Het resort is alleen te bereiken per boot. De klassiek ingerichte kamers hebben een prachtig houten interieur. De huisjes op palen in het water passen helemaal in de stijl van dit gebied. De locale woningen zijn ook op deze manier gebouwd. 's Morgens wakker worden met een prachtige zonsopkomst is werkelijk uniek.
