Get away from the bustle of the city and visit the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen nature reserve. This beautiful piece of nature is only a 30-minute drive away from Amsterdam near the coast between Zandvoort and Noordwijk. One minute you’re strolling through the green dune area, the next you’re on the beach. It is a lovely place to get some fresh air. The variety of dunes also means a rich diversity of plants and animals. You can spot red deer, roe deer, foxes and rabbits between the trees, ponds and grasslands. Or spot another photographer. This is also a great place for birdwatchers, as the area draws thousands of (water) birds. A few years ago sheep and cows were set loose to graze in the dunes. The name of the nature reserve, Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, roughly translates as Amsterdam water supply dunes. Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen have supplied drinking water to the capital since 1853. Before that the people of Amsterdam used to get their water from the canals. The same canals into which they threw their rubbish. With their rich flora and fauna the water supply dunes have now become much more than just a supplier of drinking water. Nature conservation has become an increasingly important responsibility for the water company. Much is being done to give the original environment new opportunities. The landscape around the water collection system is particularly varied: high dune tips, moist dune valleys and old deciduous forests. The area has rich flora and fauna. A labyrinth of channels and gullies in the dunes serves to supply water intended for water abstraction. If you want to visit the nature area, you are welcome from sunrise to sunset.

Located to the south of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen make up a nature reserve that also helps supply drinking water for Amsterdam. It’s a great place for a walk for photographers. It’s not uncommon to see wild foxes romping through the underbrush and deer grazing in the dunes.

Het natuurgebied De Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen bestaat uit een aantal interessante elementen, zoals oude stuifduinen in de buitenduinen, grote valleien in het middenduin en de resten van oude loopduinen in het oosten. Het afwisselende landschap, vanaf de zee tot achter de duinen, is een trekpleister voor dieren en een vruchtbare bodem voor bijzondere planten. Damherten, reeën, vossen, vleermuizen en konijnen komen hier veelvuldig voor. Grote kans dat u één van deze dieren voorbij ziet komen tijdens een wandeling. Wat vegetatie betreft bestaat het terrein uit bos en struweel, open plekken met stuifzand, vochtige en moerassige valleien en droge vlakten. In de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen mag je overal van de paden af. Zo kan je af en toe een fotograaf tegenkomen. De oorsprong van het drinkwater in Amsterdammers ligt in de grachten van de stad. Door de bevolkingsgroei in de stad raakte het water in de grachten vervuild en verzilt. Daarom werd het drinkwater vervolgens aangevoerd uit de nabij gelegen plassen. Na 1845 begon men met het zuiveren van regenwater in de duinen. Maar ook deze methode kon niet voldoende tegemoet komen aan de vraag van drinkwater. Gelukkig ontdekte men niet lang daarna een nieuwe zoetwatervoorraad. Deze lag op een gemiddelde diepte van 15 meter beneden NAP, onder een kleilaag. Dankzij die ontdekking kon men weer een tijdje voorruit.
