Marken is a former island in the IJsselmeer which was separated from the mainland by a high tide in 1164 and is now linked with the Nes by a 2km long dike built in 1957. The dike is part of the ring dike round the future Markerwaard, the fourth area planned to be reclaimed from the Zuiderzee. Although Marken іn the Netherlands іs а rather small village, there аre plenty оf Marken sights thаt visitors cаn explore аnd view. Marken wаs once аn old fishing town, аnd the architecture оf the homes reflects thіs tо the present day, wіth quaint little cottages оn every street. Marken іn the perfect place tо escape tо when the noise аnd activity оf the larger Dutch cities becomes а bit too much tо bare. Within 20 minutes of leaving Amsterdam and crossing the underground IJ tunnel, you find yourself in a landscape that bears little resemblance to the city you left behind. There are swamps and open fields. A thin strip of road connects Marken to the mainland. When looking out at the vast stretch of water you feel small and inconsequential. One great way to see more of the island, is to walk round it. It's a walk on the dyke of approximately 8 or 9 km, so it will take you roughly 2 to 3 hours. You'll certainly meet other tourists on the way, but there will also be long sections of the path where you don't see or hear anybody but numerous birds. The path that surrounds the island is not hard too find - there is only one -, so there's no need for directions here. I found the most beautiful bit to be the promontory with the lighthouse. While you can't access the lighthouse itself, it's more than impressive against the backdrop of the IJsselmeer. There's also the tiniest strip of beach just next to it, so if it's warm enough you could cool your feet here. Another thing to do is birdwatching. Countless birds enjoy picking for food on the meadows of Marken, and if you bring a good pair of binoculars, who knows what rare birds you are going to see? It's a lovely dyke path around the island amidst this surreal, desolate landscape.

The UNESCO nominated island connected to the mainland since 1957, offers a clearly visible rich history. The beautiful Dutch landscape with the beach along the dike to the lighthouse, the indescribable changeable skies over the IJsselmeer and the rest on the authentic island enrapture you. Look at the thousands of geese flying in the background. At this time of year they are easy to find in Waterland.

Marken is een authentiek stuk Nederland in het vlakke groene Waterland, dat zeer de moeite waard is om uitgebreid te bezichtigen. Sinds 1957 is het voormalige eiland verbonden met het vaste land door een dijk. Marken is, zeker internationaal gezien, een van de topattracties van Nederland. De meeste bezoekers zien echter weinig meer dan de Havenbuurt .In de top tien van Noordhollandse wandelklassiekers staat het rondje Marken ergens bovenaan. Waarschijnlijk heeft dat te maken met het feit dat in iedere wandelaar een kleine ontdekkingsreiziger schuilt. Tijdens deze rondwandeling over het eiland kom je langs de fotogenieke vuurtoren en enkele werven, waarop de inwoners vroeger bescherming tegen het stijgende water zochten. Aan de rechterkant ligt de Gouwzee. Aan de overkant kan je Monnickendam en Volendam zien liggen. Op de palen van een fuik zitten twee aalscholvers die net een aal gescholfd hebben. Ze laten hun vleugels te drogen in de wind. Het giert hier trouwens sowieso van de vogels. Op het kleine stukje dijk zien we visdiefjes, aalscholvers, kieviten en een eend waarvan we vermoeden dat het een topper is. Na een paar kronkels in de dijk kunnen we de gehuchtjes Rozewerf en Wittewerf weer zien, nu van de andere kant. Deze dorpen zijn gebouwd op terpen hier werven geheten om het hoofd te bieden aan de overstromingen die hier zo'n drie keer per jaar voorkwamen. Omdat op de werven maar weinig bouwruimte was staan de houten huizen pal op elkaar, gescheiden door smalle steegjes. Twee veelkleurige bultjes in het landschap. Voor de dijk bij Rozewerf staat een tiental ijsbrekers: wigvormige houten constructies die het kruiend ijs aan het einde van de winter moeten tegenhouden. Na nog een paar bochten in de dijk passeren we het dorp Moeniswerf, dat iets verder landinwaarts ligt. Voorbij Moeniswerf herinnert een brede sloot dwars door het eiland aan de plannen om een kanaal door Marken en Waterland te graven. Het Goudriaenkanaal had de zeeschepen vanuit Amsterdam een alternatieve route moeten geven zodat ze het Noordhollands kanaal en de ondiepten rond Pampus konden ontwijken, een tijdwinst van een paar uur. Bij gebrek waarschijnlijk aan geld werd het project in 1828 stopgezet. Op de punt van een strekdam in het Markermeer staat vuurtoren het Paard in strenge winters altijd goed voor een paar spectaculaire foto's van kruiend ijs. We kijken over het water waar het langzaam begint te schemeren. De zon komt nog even onder de grote regenstapelwolk - een z.g. cumulonimbus door piepen vlak voor 'ie ondergaat. De hemel achter de zeedijk staat in een felgele gloed die scherp afsteekt tegen de stapelwolk erboven. Een raar maar prachtig doorkijkje. Tien minuten later staan we weer in de haven, waar nog een paar cafés open zijn.
