Shibam (شبام حضرموت) - a photo on Flickriver

            Shibam, one of Yemen's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is one of the oldest and best examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction. It is therefore considered that the oldest remaining skyscrapers in the world are in this town of less than 10 000 inhabitants. About 500 buildings in Shibam are tower houses made from mud bricks. They rise 5 to 11 stories high, with some of them even above 30 meters high, and most of them date back to the 16th century. Obviously, due to the fragility of the construction materials, many of them have had to be rebuilt several times.
