Ai Nikkor 20mm f/4

The Ai Nikkor 20mm f/4 lens performs much better than the current production Ai-S Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 lens or the equivalent AF 20mm f/2.8D. Apparently, the slightly newer Ai Nikkor 20mm f/3.5 lens also performs very well. The newest AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G lens provides further enhanced image quality and overall optical performance, along with a much wider maximum aperture. Still, the wide depth of field of any 20mm lens makes manual focusing easy, and the extremely small size and weight of the 20/4 is perfect for travel when compared with the much larger 20/1.8 or ultra-wide zooms.
