Speckled gall of a Beaked Twig Gall Wasp on Scrub Oak

This is a beautiful speckled gall of the Beaked Twig Gall Wasp (Disholcaspis plumbella) in the family Cynipidae, Hymenoptera growing on Scrub Oak (Quercus berberidifolia, Fagaceae). The pointed beak of these galls is distinctive. It's about the size of a grape. I have another photo of the same gall from a month ago here. These galls are the nests of specialized wasps, but they are made by the oak in response to the "sting" of the wasp. The larva of a wasp lives inside until it's time to emerge, mate, and start another gall. This is my photo for the Macro Mondays group, with the theme of "Speckled". HMM!
