Ant tending aphids on a willow leaf - a photo on Flickriver

Here is an ant tending its aphids on a willow leaf. This is too tight of a crop, but I like the photo - it shows the tenderness of the ant despite its ferocious appearance. The tiny aphids are cute! The ant is family Formicidae, maybe species Formica moki. The willow is a native Arroyo Willow (Salix lasiolepis, Salicaceae) by the creek which still has some leaves. I'm not sure about the aphids, but they are not the Giant Willow Aphids that I've been showing lately. The relationship between ants and aphids really is an example of mutual aid - the ants care for the aphids and protect them from predators, and the aphids feed the ants by making honeydew.
