Bee-like Robber Fly (Laphria, Asilidae)

This is looking face-to-face with an impressive Bee-like Robber Fly in the genus Laphria of the family Asilidae. It's a large fly, maybe 5/8 inch long, with dragonfly-like eyes and bumblebee-like yellow and black hairs. They are predators that catch their prey in the air like dragonflies - hence the wonderful eyes. This one was grounded by the gloomy weather last weekend - it was cold and it let me get close, see this photo and this photo. I found it on a leaf of native Wood Mint (Stachys bullata, Lamiaceae). Sure, I saved this shot for Fly Day Friday - HFDF! (San Marcos Pass, 16 June 2018)
