Ornate pupal husk of an insect in the woods

This is the ornate pupal husk of an insect in the woods that I can't identify. My first thought was maybe a beetle because of its c-shape, but a robber fly pupa is a better guess. See Eric Vanbergen's comment below and the images at BugGuide. I found this one today above our retaining wall which makes a perfect window into the floor of the woods at eye level. (San Marcos Pass, 28 October 2015)

It was cloudy and windy this morning, then clear and windy in the afternoon. The common thread is the wind, up to gale force, too windy for my kind of photos. It might be windy tomorrow too. That's a lot of air going *somewhere*! This was my only outdoor photo today.
