Shiprock vs. Thunderhead - a photo on Flickriver

            Shiprock is a formation in northwestern New Mexico. Shiprock rises 1,583 feet (482 m) above the surrounding plain, with a total elevation of 7,177 (2187 m) above sea level.

While doing the conversions to metric for my many non-US contacts, it struck me how tall Shiprock actually stands. Compared to man-made structures:

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France: 324 m (1063 ft)
Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: 451.9 m (1483 ft)
Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower), Chicago, Illinois, US: 442 m (1451 ft)
Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE, (as of this writing, the world's tallest building): 828 m (2717 ft)

That's a lot of boring numbers to digest, so here's the short version:

Shiprock is frakking tall.

Shiprock is taller than any man-made structure on the North American continent. 

Now look back at the photo. Those thunderheads are way up there, well over the peak of Shiprock. That makes me feel very small.
