In the splash zone. - a photo on Flickriver

            I photographed this Chinstrap Penguin at Point Wild on Elephant Island in the South Shetland Isles.  This is the spot where Shackleton's crew camped awaiting his return from South Georgia.  There is a Chinstrap breeding colony at Point Wild so this would have been the species of penguin that the crew of 22 men ate to keep themselves alive for four months.  Usually Chinstraps are highly gregarious but I spotted this lonely individual stood on a rock in the splash zone as we cruised past in a Zodiac.  That mottled blue background was a huge glacier.
