Great White Egret - a photo on Flickriver

Great White Egret

            Here is a flight shot of the Great White Egret that I found at Bretton Lakes in West Yorkshire on Sunday.  They have a very wide world distribution, occurring in North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia.  Populations in the colder regions of North America, Asia and Europe are generally migratory, although they seem to be just about resident in Britain.  But they have had a remarkable range expansion during my lifetime.  My first field guide showed that the only breeding sites in Europe were Hungary and Romania.  Now they have spread across much of Europe with nearly 200 pairs breeding in the Netherlands.  They began breeding in Britain in 2012 and we now have about a dozen pairs across two locations (Somerset and Norfolk). But there are also many non-breeding birds wandering around the UK, including this individual in West Yorkshire.  Fortunately it graced me with three fly-pasts affording plenty of photo-opportunities for flight shots.
