Great White Egret in West Yorkshire - a photo on Flickriver

            I have posted this one for posterity as it was a serendipitous self-find as I walked round Bretton Lakes in West Yorkshire this morning.  When I developed an interest in rare birds in the early 1980s there were only about 20 records ever, of Great White Egret in Britain and only 10 of these had been during my lifetime.  But by the early 1990s they were being  recorded annually in Britain, with around 20 records per year by the turn of the Millennium.  Today there are more than 200 records per year.  It started breeding down in Somerset in 2012 and this population is now around a dozen pairs.  And in 2017 it started breeding at a new site over in Norfolk.  So no longer the great rarity it once was, but still a great find on a morning stroll.  I also found a Smew, two Kingfishers and a Stoat, so quite a successful stroll.
