A bad year for Grouse - a photo on Flickriver

            Today is the inglorious twelfth, the start of the grouse shooting season.  Although as it falls on a Sunday this year, tradition dictates that they do not shoot.  But they were out shooting on the Peak District moors today, happy to dispense with "tradition" when it suits them.  There are so few grouse about this year I'm pretty sure they were shooting Pheasants instead.  The long, hot, rainless summer has resulted in a dearth of insect food, in particular Crane Fly larvae, which are vital for growing grouse.  Also an outbreak of Heather Beetle has resulted in poor quality heather on which adult grouse feed.  But I'm sure birds of prey will get the blame from the grouse shooting industry.
