Will you teach us how to goose-step?

            Signs of spring as I drove through the Peak District today.  This was a brood of eleven newly-hatched Greylag goslings being chaperoned across a road by the parents.

When the first breeding bird atlas was produced in 1968-72 there were 126 confirmed or probable breeding 10km squares for Greylag Goose in Britain, with the majority in Scotland and Cumbria.  There were some deliberate introductions and some natural range extension but by the time of the latest Bird Atlas (2007-11) there were 1508 10km breeding squares (confirmed and probable) in Britain.

The name Greylag Goose was coined by Thomas Pennant in 1768, but the name Grey Lag is much older.  Pennant's name is tautological because the word Lag is an old word for goose, so Greylag Goose literally means Grey Goose Goose.
