Whitethroat - a photo on Flickriver

Whitethroat

            The Whitethroat (Sylvia communis) is a common British migrant warbler that winters in sub-Saharan Africa.  It does have a white throat but so do a number of other birds, so the most diagnostic field character is the bright chestnut wing panel.  Males generally have a greyer (less brown) head than females, with a brighter eyering and pinkish underparts.  But many Whitethroats are less straightforward to identify down to sex.  I think this one is a male, but I wouldn't bet my shirt on it.  I photographed this one near to my house in the Pennine hills of West Yorkshire.  It perched briefly on a twig among a patch of Rosebay Willowherb.
