2018 - Vancouver - Celebrating Community

            This 2011 wall mural is across from Sunrise Market on Powell Street at Gore Avenue.  

The mural is a collaboration of artists Joey Mallett and Rita Buchwitz.  The couple received a grant from the Vancouver 125th Anniversary Mural Program to complete the project.

Titled “Celebrating Community” the mural beautifies a plain wall of St. James’s Cecelia House on Powell Street.  The building offers supportive housing for those living with mental health issues.   The mural incorporates symbols that refer to history of the community. 

Fishing boats represent the Japanese who fished and lived in this area known as Japan Town. Shells represent the First Nations midden that is reputed to have once existed on the shores nearby.

Improving lives of vulnerable people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is the St. James Community Service Society mission.   The mural celebrates the 50th anniversary of St. James Community Service Society and the 125th anniversary of the City of Vancouver.
