Passing Fancy

            In the morning light, a rare moment of peace at the feeder, where the highly aggressive male Rufous hummingbird (R) allows a female Anna's hummer (L) to enjoy a few sips of sugar water. 

The Rufous hummer was just passing through on his way north, although he acted like he owned the place during his short visit, while providing some stiff competition for the resident Anna's males in between their own aerial jousts. Even the Anna's usually cannot tolerate each other's presence at the feeder, although a pair sometimes settle in where they can't see each other, like these two. 

The presiding male Anna's hummingbird will also stand guard while his mate feeds.

The migrating Rufous hummingbirds may travel up to 2,000 miles.

Here, I have to admit to a little hypocrisy: I dislike and discourage feeding animals, but I do make an exception for hummingbirds.
