jiulong shan 九龙山 - a photo on Flickriver

            Another good half-day escape from Beijing is Jiulong Shan, with trails on the long eastern ridge of the mountain snaking down to the roadside near Mentougou town centre, about 20 minutes by bus from Pingguoyuan, the most westerly stop on Beijing's subway line one.

On my way up, I ran into this hiker, 72 year old Mr. Gao, who lived in one the villages up the Yongding river valley in Mentougou, a villager, but also a Beijinger. He seemed in good health, and told me what he used to work as, and he seemed to reply "zhongjie", which is a representative or agent of some kind, but I couldn't make clear exactly... maybe a job position with the local communist party ?
