East Side Skyline - a photo on Flickriver

East Side Skyline

5th Avenue from Central Park's Sheep Meadow.

Sheep Meadow has always been a challenging location so I thought it would be an appropriate testing ground for my new Alpine Delta Conyne kites from Into The Wind. The weather station at Belvedere Castle was recording winds from 6-8mph. Which is pretty much what I found above the trees. Ground wind was sketchy, but these new kites are ultra light and launch in 3mph winds. Even so, it took about 15-20 minutes to get the two kite train launched. The first launch didn't work out so well. The lower kite inverted and I couldn't shake it upright. A gust caught it and caused the kite to fly down against the thin, hollow carbon fiber cross bar causing it to snap. I took it down and replaced it with a cross bar from a spare and spent another 20 minutes waiting for a good gust to launch the train a second time. A nice ground breeze pulled the train into good air. I quickly attached the camera, but the sun was beginning to set. This is the one good shot from 50 minutes of shooting. Next time I'll send up the D40x and push the iso to 800...
