4 meteors [Draconid Meteor Shower, 2011]

            Went out with the sneaky plan of taking tele shots of the thunderstorms which hovered over Grand Island and York on the day before and continued even at 3 a.m. to scour along in a lethargic line, but bored with that pretty quickly--the cloud tops were visible but they and the lightning were indistinct. 

At one point saw a meteor streaking overhead, and so with a changed plan, stayed out anyway, until all the memory cards were full and the light was starting to come up. I figured the only way to get meteor pictures is to stay out there. There were local dogs sniffing around the truck from a short distance so I didn't stand outside and look up for very long, unfortunately, but they left me alone and it was nice being out in the wind. Clouds would fly over from time to time and obscure the shot but they'd not stay very long. It might be interesting to stitch the shots together to show a time lapse of the sky, but that's for another day, and I have a lot of those to go through.

 This photo and the next one in the stream are meteor streaks captured in the process of sitting up and shivering under the edge of the cold front. Only a few miles away when I pulled into the driveway, the system still hovering in the same place according to radar, it was stuffy enough I took off my hoody and noticed the interior of the truck was cooler than the outside air (A/C hasn't worked in there in about 5 years).

The height of the Draconid meteor shower occurred over North America in 2011, but during the day. Despite that, it was a huge thrill to actually get a few pictures of meteors; it's always been something I wanted to do, and there's another shower over 21-22 October I'm hoping I can catch from somewhere far from city lights.
