WWII Boonie Dogs

The Boonie Dogs of Saipan are descendants of American WWII military dogs. In Saipan, the military did not need the big attack dogs but needed the sniffer dogs to sniff out the Japanese hiding in the caves. Since WWII, the once heroic combat dogs mixed together and became what we now call Boonie Dogs. The Saipan Boonie Dogs seem to be a mix between Bloodhound, Labrador, Rottweiler, and German Shepard. Do you notice another breed mixed in these dogs? Today their population is out of control and they are literally starving to death on the streets. The three dogs on the right are a few of my adopted Boonie Dogs including my little exploring buddy, Stewie. The picture on the left could possibly be James E McGreevey who found this dog on Roi Island. That dog and McGreevey were inseparable right through Iwo Jima. (Thanks to Theo for the left picture and his research on that picture.) When WWII ended it took months and for some a year to get all our troops back home. The military dogs had to stay behind.
