Thermos Bottle Geyser 32 years apart

            While showing features at Monument Geyser Basin, I thought viewers might enjoy a comparison of two photos of Thermos Bottle Geyser taken in 1983 on slide film and then again in 2015 from a Canon DSLR.  

Also called Monument Geyser, the Thermos Bottle stands about 7-8 feet tall. The narrow tube is still spouting a little bit of spray and steam, the only geyser in the basin still showing activity. In the early days of the park it jetted water in a spray about 15 high much of the time. Slowly its vent is being choked by sinter deposits. Steam is still emerging all over the basin from other springs and fumaroles.

I was glad I could still make it up the steep trail to the area. The trail starts at the Gibbon River crossing. It follows the river for 1/2 mile before ascending 600 feet in the next 0.7 mile. The basin, on a slope, is about 350 yards long and 50 yards wide.
