Handkerchief Pool - a photo on Flickriver

Handkerchief Pool

            This was a very popular attraction in the early days of Yellowstone Park. Located off the boardwalk in Black Sand Basin about 1.4 miles WNW of Old Faithful, Handkerchief Pool acted as an amusing natural washing machine for handkerchiefs. Visitors would put a hanky in one end. It would get sucked into one vent and go out of sight. A few moments later, it would pop out clean at another vent.

Such abuse of natural features is forbidden now. Indeed, some other springs were ruined forever by thoughtless visitors clogging them with coins and junk. Handkerchief Geyser itself went through major changes, as T. Scott Bryan describes:

"Unfortunately in 1926 someone jammed logs into one of the openings. Later, eruptions by nearby Rainbow Pool washed gravel into the crater, completely obliterating the site. In 1950 Handkerchief began to reappear as a bubbling spot in the gravel. It was shoveled out, and the logs were removed. Handkerchief Pool now performs as either a perpetual spouter or a geyser. The geyser activity, most recently seen in 2000, commonly has durations far longer than the intervals. The play reaches no more than 2 or 3 feet high."

If you search on handkerchiefpool on Flickr, you can find a couple of historic photos from 1903 and 1920 of people (including rangers) using the spring to wash handkerchiefs.
