Green Geyser: Crater Hills - a photo on Flickriver

            The real photo op at Crater Hills is the perpetual spouter called Crater Hills Geyser. It's right at the foot of the twin hills that rise above the remote thermal basin. You can hear it and see its steam from some distance away.  Unlike most springs, its geyserite formations are dark, but still striking and beautiful. On this day, the sunlight peeped in and out, adding highlights to different parts of the scene.

Photos from 2012 showed the water to be bright aqua blue, so I was surprised to see it vivid lime green this year (2015). Perhaps the temperature has lowered to allow the growth of bacteria, or it is pumping out more dissolved sulfur now. Either way, it's a stunning audio-visual experience to watch up close.
