Stygian Caves, Yellowstone - a photo on Flickriver

            The final Yellowstone cave I am posting is called Stygian Caves, again in the Mammoth area. Like the others, this one is dangerous to enter. Signs warn passers-by of carbon dioxide gas. Indeed, you can see the bones of birds and small animals that wandered in and were overcome.

The Haynes Guide (1966) describes it thus: "Stygian (hellish; infernal; deathly) Caves seem to have been appropriately named due to the suffocating gases which issue from low openings and kill small birds and animals that enter them." Later guidebooks omit any mention of these caves, undoubtedly out of concerns for public safety and park liability.

As far as I can tell, this is the first photo of Stygian Caves on Flickr, except for an antique photo someone scanned from an old guidebook.  Even on the internet, photos of the caves are hard to find.  See my "Rarely Seen" album for other examples of unique or rare photos of interesting places.
