Savannah Scenes, Amboseli - a photo on Flickriver

Before going to Africa, this is exactly what I thought an evening in the savannah would look like. An almost fairy tale like setting with soft lighting , and animals mulling about peacefully in beautiful landscapes without a care in the world.

But that’s just the way it looks. Can you tell that the zebras are annoyed? Can you tell there are not one but five cheetahs just outside the frame? Boisterous little things, playing with each other, chasing all these zebras about for fun and then rolling in the sand after. I have never seen cheetahs teasing zebras like that. They showed no real intent to catch them, they would just herd them around and then stop. Like border collies. And I have never known zebras to be that resilient, defiant almost, refusing to move away from their preferred grazing spot just to please a unruly bunch of cheetahs.

The savannah holds many such surprising stories and most of them unravel during the bewitching sunset hour.
