Special:
- The "100" series is designed by Jan Wilsgaard.
- The Express has a fixed rack above the front seat and a raised roof. Its rear hatch was made of glass-reinforced plastic.
- It was available in 3 configurations: standard station wagon (full glazing, 5 seats with the option of an extra 2 rear-facing seats), fully glazed panel-van with only 2 seats, and panel van with no glass in the rear doors and rear quarter panels. However, it was never offered in the U.S. market.
- The "boxiness automotive design" is very aerodynamic, very useful getting in and out, lots of space, low pollution of the side windows, low wind noise and small lift at high speeds.
- From the beginning, the 140 series has a dual-circuit braking systeem: four pistons at the front discs and two pistons at the back.
- It has a four-speed manual gearbox, a Zenith-Stromberg 175 CD-25 carburettor, and rear wheel drive.
- The bodywork was constructed of phosphate-treated steel (to improve paint adhesion) and with heavy use of undercoating and anti-corrosive oil treatment.
- In order to circumvent export regulations, the 140 Series were also shipped to Gent (Belgium) as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and assembled in VOLVO plant in Gent.
- They were also built in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (Volvo Halifax Assembly), in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and in Shah Alam, Malaysia (SMA).
- But all 145 units were built at the VOLVO plant in Torslanda, Sweden.
- The 140 series proved to be tough cars with many survivors.
