Mersey Gateway bridge - a photo on Flickriver

            It's not the longest, or the highest, or even the most beautiful, but it is perhaps the newest. 

Heading out for cake deliveries in Liverpool  and north of there, I was forced to cross the new Mersey Gateway bridge as my preferred Runcorn-Widnes bridge is now closed for updates. But it was cold, bright and calm so in my best dress shoes and suit I decided to head down to the banks of the Mersey. Whilst the new bridge with the steam rising from the huge Fidler's Ferry power station beyond is a sight it was what lay on the frosty river bank that intrigued me. I could see all sorts of old boat timbers. old brick structures and all sorts of interesting shapes poking out of the mud. I reckon an archaeological dig there would discover all sorts of treasures!

Crossing the bridge was a rather sterile experience. You don't get much of a view as there are panels to cut down crosswinds. And I would have preferred there to be toll booths so that I could throw my £ 2 in a bucket or pass them to a friendly toll person, but no, I've got to find a Merseyflow website that isn't a scam website and pay online before midnight tomorrow or get a £40 penalty.
