Jodie's ears aren't very big, so I needed all the magnification I could get.

Thanks so much to my friend Anuar for taking the photo, Jodie and I don't have a lot of pictures of us together. She looks typically amused by the goings on, but it's rare that I have such a calm expression. My face is usually furrowed in subject-stalking, setting-adjusting concentration, or twisted in a mask of rage at an uncooperative bird.

It's also a nice photo of the lens/camera combination that I haul around. You can see there is a Swiss arca type plate attached to the lens foot. When in the field I pop it onto a:

Benro DJ90 head for Monopod

That's the really important part of the equation - the plate and DJ90. The head is lightweight but not too robust, so I always carry the rig by the lens foot - never by the monopod. 

For stability I started a few years back with a tripod and gimbal head. Although it functioned beautifully I found it too awkward and heavy to carry on long treks. So I switched to a monopod, starting with a carbon fibre Gitzmo model. Eventually I settled on a basic two stage metal one from Monfrotto, as the multi-stage Gitzmo took too long to deploy.
