1711_0807 Two Moose - a photo on Flickriver

            These two are the moose seen in my last two uploads, photographed after they had crossed the road and sauntered out over the frosty prairie. In the background you can see their "shelter belt" - the shrubby growth along the river that provides them not only with food but also shelter from winter's biting winds. Small compared to other rivers, the Frenchman has nevertheless cut steep banks into the prairie turf, creating "warm microsites", to borrow Bill's term from yesterday's comment section. In cold weather it becomes an animal highway, too: frozen, snow-covered, out of the wind. I love walking the frozen Frenchman, following tracks. 

In this shot, a small group of bison grazes in the far distance, at the foot of the hills. Sometimes a trip through Grasslands is like a safari.
