PIG, PORK, HAM, and SWINE -- At the Top of Okinawa's Ritually Clean, Sacred, and Holy Food Pyramid

Some go by Kosher, and others Halal, but when you're on Oki, the Pig is your Pal ~ !

Sacred and Holy, nobody's a wimp, and to prove that we mean it, we'll toss in some shrimp ~ !

What's unclean to others is here blessed of Heaven, like crabs and clams, and lobster times seven ~ !

All Faiths are respected, all rules we abide, Yet all of our Vegans eat ham on the side ~ !

Of course you may diet the way that you please, But on Okinawa it's Pork Rolls with Cheese ~ !

At Soba Shops everywhere all seats are taken, the Noodles topped-off with Pork Ribs or Bacon ~ !

On ancestors' God-Shelves, and each Holy Shrine, food offered to God includes Pork Roast and Swine ~ !

If you think God is angry, the opposite's true; These blessed Okinawans live longer than you ~ !

The above pictured hamu-maki ("Ham Roll") and shrimp plate is one of my favorite Okinawan New Year treats. Cheese, String Beans, and Carrots are rolled up in ham and seaweed, dipped in batter, and fried in oil. Chunks of Pork, fish cake, and all kinds of delicious, bottom-feeding shrimp top it off.

It all goes great with Coca-Cola ~ !

[NOTE : I am usually the only one drinking Coke with these foods. In high class restaurants, my requests for Coke cause heads to turn, and jaws to drop. Of course, if I'm not driving, the Coke is always mixed half-and-half with some strong AWAMORI. To top it off, I refuse to use Soy Sauce (which masks the original flavors of all fine foods that it touches) and eat everything as is --- raw fish and sushi included ~ !]

POSTSCRIPT : In 2012, for the first time in its long history, Okinawa has begun to address the issue of those in the world whose religion doesn't allow Pork. The Okinawa Tourist Service, hoping to tap into the "tourist dollars" of a billion Muslims, has tried to encourage the creation of some halal restaurants within reach of Naha Airport. This is a whole new idea around here. Let's see how it goes :
