At an altitude of aproximatly1800 m., Hmong mother, Jawn, and her youngest daughter, Mai, are cutting red rice near their home at the Sa Pa village. This village is rarely visited by tourist because of the very difficult access, but has a stunning view everywhere you look. Jawn is the mother in law of my very good friend So (we call her Sa Pa So) who at 21 can claim to be the first Hmong recognized tour guide, seven years ago. She is the only cash earner in the family and her income supports 3 families. Mai at 16 is not married yet because she is waiting for her Hmong boyfriend to finish his military service.

After cutting the rice, it is left to dry in the sun for a day and than its ‘hit’ into a large wooden container. The family already has a few 40 kg. sack in the field and tonight Jawn and Mai will sleep in the field to gourd the rice.

I will go back there tomorrow to spend another day with this wonderful family.
