The overnight temps were -16F where I was in Jay, and the morning windchills were -22F, so although I really do like the cold, standing around with a camera on a tripod at -22F isn't all that much fun.

Because of the crap forecast, I slept in till about 9:30am, had a gourmet breakfast (eggs, goat cheese, guacomole in a wrap), read a bit, and eventually dragged my ass long enough that I could catch some late afternoon light and sunset.

It turned out that the predictions of utter doom were not quite right. After the typical morning cloud cover burned off, it was vibrant, almost polarized, blue the rest of the day.

Of course, as I got to the summit of Hopkins and Spread Eagle Mountains things fell apart fast. The "haze" in the photo isn't haze, it's blowing snow. Eventually it made it's way my way, but really wasn't much of an issue.

In my opinion this is really a sunrise mountain, on a clear morning there should be fog coming up from the center cleft (the Ausable Lakes), and warm light on the peaks in the background. In the afternoon, your only choice is to shoot into the sun.

Hopkins/Spread Eagle are little mountains at about 3500ft, but they offer views of 22 of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks.

Nippletop, Colvin, then the Ausable Lakes, Sawteeth, Armstrong, and Wolfjaws. On a clear day, or with a walk a few feet (or few hundred feet) to the right of my location, you can see into John's Brook Valley.
