PROJECT 52 #2 - Gravenimage - a photo on Flickriver

When I saw this title while looking for suitable themes for January project photos, my first thought was: an image mounted on a coffin (these were very popular in Polish 'republic of nobles', XVI/XVII century). But when I put the word 'gravenimage' in Google, it said that 'the Hebrew word translated “graven image” means literally “an idol”. A graven image is an image carved out of stone, wood, or metal'.

Of wood. Of course, I remembered about the pagan idols from pre-Christian Slavic times. And that was a direction I decided to take.

There were two possibilites. I could make a portrait in my atelier and put a texture on it, using Photoshop or Elements. As I did have non of them, I had to do this without digital methods.

I came to the park 30 minutes earlier in order to find a suitable tree. When I met with my model, I put him in front of the tree, leaning on it, mounted my camera on tripod and started making photos. I had thought 20 minutes should be enough, but we ended after 1 hour, including the change of the tree. I was lightening Robert's face with flashlight, in order to set the focus (it was completely dark, 6 p.m.), and releasing the flash unit (with the diffuser mounted) held in my hand manually - one blink for Robert and the second one without him witihin the frame.

Fortunately, Robert offered to give me a lift, so I was back home and could make a hot cup of tea quicker - and warm my freezed hands.
