Las aldeas Kuna están situadas siempre en una isla delante de la entrada de un río pues el agua dulce es lo más valioso de San Blas.
Las casas son chozas de bambú o de madera con techo de palmas: son construidas por toda la comunidad en un par de días. Los baños están situados en una choza especial construida sobre el mar para una evacuación “natural”. Los indios Kuna duermen en hamacas.
La mayoría de las casas tienen un “estacionamiento” especial para el cayuco.

A traditional Kuna hut is square, with a thatched roof. Mangrove wood, due to its thickness, durability and strength, is used primarily for structural support. Thin white cane, which too is gathered on the mainland, is used for the walls and doors. Surprisingly, there is little if any bamboo used for construction purposes. The expert craftsman that they are, Kunas, with the help of the entire community, can construct homes and community structures with surprising speed. In spite of the heavy rain, the interiors of these structures are very dry and stable.

Most of the 365 islands of the San Blas archipelago are uninhabited. Achutupu is typical of the 49 inhabited islands. The majority are tightly packed with traditional earth floor dwellings, constructed around a frame of sturdy tree trunks, with thatched roofs and walls of cane or bamboo. Kuna homes comprise two such huts: one in which to hang hammocks and the other for cooking and eating. Coconut palms, banana plants, hot chillies and medicinal herbs grow cramped in unused corners and in the spaces between houses. There is very little spare land. Anyone wishing to build a new home would probably first have to create a land plot by filling in shallow water around the island with rocks and sand.
