The Monks and the Maechi - a photo on Flickriver

            The monks are on the left in orange, chanting as a team so there are no gaps where one person would have to take a breath of air (it was impressive to hear!) and a single maechi in white. (which is something like a nun, or the female version of a monk, though they're not really on the same "level" both figuratively, and in this photo literally)
It's all very strange to me, but that makes it all the more fascinating, so it was interesting to sit in there for a while, basking in the sights and the sounds, mesmerized by something I don't really understand.
It's kind of like when you listen to foreign music, and the vocals are in a language you don't understand, so they become their own instrument, loosing the message, but retaining some of the feeling. Which was happening with the chanting, but also with the visuals, which I don't know much about, but the sense of importance is obvious, and on a whole other level than most things I've experienced.
