The People's Story Museum is a museum housed in the historic Canongate Tolbooth, the collections of which tell the story of the people of Edinburgh from the late 18th century to the present day. This is done through use of oral history, reminiscence and written sources.

The museum houses Britain's largest collection of early reform flags and banners: 144 in all. These include banners in support of political reform, trade unions and the anti-apartheid movement. The museums also houses waxworks and which illustrate the written histories of Edinburgh people.

There are three galleries and a film screening room in the museum. The first gallery looks at life in tenement houses in the 18th century. The second gallery houses many banners from the museum's collection and tells the stories of Edinburgh citizens in the 20th century, through waxworks and written histories. The final galleries describe Edinburgh in the mid- to late-20th century.

The film in the screening room shows personal stories of four Edinburgh citizens who grew up in the city and worked in the printing and building trades, in a co-op store and as a servant.

Dentro de un edificio de lujo y con una historia de largo recorrido, el Canongate Tolbooth, es un recorrido por las condiciones de vida de los escoceses desde el siglo XVIII hasta la actualidad.

Original museo dedicado a la gente común, a las personas de a pie y sus costumbres a lo largo de la historia de la ciudad. La exposición muestra como han vivido los habitantes de la capital, desde el siglo XVIII hasta la
actualidad.

Abrió sus puertas en 1989, y está ubicado en un edificio que antiguamente sirvió como prisión, hecho que aún se puede
constatar debido a que algunas partes han permanecido inalteradas, sirviendo sus celdas en ocasiones para retratar diversas situaciones del pasado.

Las exposiciones del museo están repartidas en tres plantas diferentes, y en ellas podemos contemplar desde las más duras condiciones de trabajo hasta la forma en que los ciudadanos pasaban sus vacaciones. La información del museo sólo está disponible en inglés, aunque se trata de
unas exposiciones fundamentalmente visuales, así que la diferencia de idiomas no será un problema para visitarlo, además la entrada es gratuita.

En el primer piso nos encontramos con los aspectos más cotidianos de la vida en Edimburgo durante el siglo XVIII, tales como la decoración y mobiliario de las casas, los diferentes oficios y también los métodos de castigo a los
delincuentes.

En el segundo piso se exponen las condiciones de vida en
los siglos XIX y XX, durante la revolución industrial y también la pobreza y hambruna que se extendieron durante los durísimos años de la guerra.

En el tercer piso hallamos un ambiente algo más relajado, siendo esta planta dedicada a las diferentes formas de pasar las vacaciones, además de contemplar otros aspectos como la influencia de la religión o la importancia de la educación y la cultura.
