The Falls of Edinample occur where the Burn of Ample tumbles thunderously into an idyllic gorge, then passing by the fairytale 16th century Edinample Castle before entering Loch Earn. The gaelic name of the waterfall, Eas Aodann Ambail, translates as ‘falls of the face of the cauldron’. This refers to the magical plunge pool which, according to locals, is reputed to be the haunt of fairies.

About 3 years ago I visited this waterfall for the very first time after spotting the name on a map. I googled it, but couldn't find much information about it or any decent images so decided to venture there myself as I was stopping in the vicinity. It's located on the south shore of Loch Earn which is a single track road so parking was an issue, but luckily my car is very small so I managed to tuck into a verge nearby. From the road I could hear the roar of the falls so I knew where to head, but clambering down the steep bank to the base was another adventure as it was overgrown and slippery and had obviously hardly ever been done before.

However, when I reached the bottom of the plunge pool I couldn't believe the spectacle I was faced with. This is, in my opinion, one of the most picturesque and impressive waterfalls I've seen in this country. It really is a place where fairytales are made of. I can remember wondering at the time how such an impressive feature this close to the roadside could go so unnoticed and unfrequented.

However, I think I spoke too soon.

When I returned to this area last week I thought I'd pay another visit to this magnificent cascade. To my dismay, as I pulled up at the roadside I noticed a couple of diggers at the top of the falls. When I parked up and ventured closer, I was horrified to see much of the surrounding trees and woodland had been felled leaving a slippery slope of mud and boulders. On the riverbank, a wooden runway is currently being constructed to the base of the falls from the top. The whole riverbank was like a construction site, with machinery and building materials scattered everywhere. At the base of the falls stood an unfinished building, which will probably become a cafe or tourist info in the future.

This place is obviously being transformed into a tourist attraction for the future. This isn't a bad thing but, for me, the enigmatic atmosphere and magical aura which existed on my first visit had been destroyed. I would still recommend a visit once the work is complete though, as the cascade itself is truly tremendous. But, I'm still glad I had the chance to visit this place before the changes.
