Western Tanager -- Male (Piranga ludoviciana); Santa Fe National Forest, NM, Thompson Ridge [Lou Feltz]

            The adult males of the species are our most colorful mountain bird. Most other North American male Tanagers sport some vivid red coloring, but none other has such an intense yellow belly. This adult male has been drawn in by our fountain... it's a rare reliable water source in this semi-arid mountain region. If you're looking for this species and think you hear a Robin's song... investigate. Their calls are very similar. This has been a good year for this species... we're now seeing lots of their juvies!
